Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio (Cantillon)

For those who may not be familiar: anything by Cantillon is glorious lambic goodness. This is a blend of 1,2 and 3 year old lambics in a re-fermented bottle. To make everything better it is organic.

Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio (Cantillon) = 8/10
Ratebeer 3.77 98th percentile
Beer Advocate A-

Nose: spicy, sweet and sour with lemon and yeast
Mouthfeel: light and effervescent, med-full, crisp yet sour
Taste: like sparking wine but not mouth pucking dry, lemon and citrus and low carbonation, wool blanket, straw, lot o-stuff
Aftertaste: a sour crispness at end.
Opinion: Yucky, no one should have to try this beer. Retailers all remaining stock can be sent to my house!

Cherish Kriek Lambic

Whenever you dive into a fruit lambic, you know there will be some sweetness. This one was a little over-done.

Cherish Kriek Lambic 4/10

Ratebeer 3.12 61st percentile
Beer Advocate B

This was a syrupy sweet fruit lambic with a light-medium mouthfeel. The colour was clear and deep red. It was very bubbly and sweet like maraschino cherries. There was only the faintest of lambic tartness at the end. What was left over was a long, slick sweet coating of mildly tart cherry syrup. I thought it was too sweet for a lambic.

Brussels Fruit Beer Apple

Brussels Fruit Beer Apple
Lambic Fruit

Taste +5

I was not expecting this; it was lightly lemony, citrus with a bit of wheat. There was an abundance of effervescence and a sweet apple cider taste. Even thought it was quite sweet, there was a faint spiciness and a light wheat/yeast tang.

Aftertaste +1

The was a sweet apple juice like flavour that was not too tart.

Alcohol Content -1 3.2%

This brew was delicious, refreshing and surprising to the palate. I have never tasted anything like this before.

Ingame Enhancement +1

This is being used to boost the score up.

Overall 7/10

Usually fruit lambics have a good tartness or sourness to them. Not this beer; it was pleasantly sweet. You could tell that it was made with 30% apple juice.

Premium Faro

Premium Faro (St. Louis)

Ratebeer 2.84 30th percentile
Beer Advocate B-

I have wanted to try this style but could not find any locally. Luckily I picked this one up at Firefly CBAW in Vancouver. The Faro style is essentially a lambic that has been sweetened or diluted to make it less tart and more palatable.

Taste +4

There is a lot of sweetness on the nose; mostly like tart, green apple. It was very apple cider like. The sip was effervescent, crisp and truly refreshing. There was juiciness to it, similar to dry English apple cider. Not tart at all.

Aftertaste 0

It was off dry, very crisp with a fast ending lingering of apple tartness.

Alcohol Content -1 3.2%

This is perhaps the lightest beer I have tried, but it did not lack in flavour.

Value +1

I wish that I had bought another one. This was delicious.

Ingame Enhancement +1

No gaming tonight, but I did learn that I might begin my journey to become a certified beer judge.
Overall 5/10

This was a delicious, sweet, slightly tart and fruity beer. Perfect for the patio on a hot day, or just about any other excuse you could think of.

Storm Black Currant Lambic

Storm Black Currant Lambic

Ratebeer 2.8/5 no rating

The story, if you believe it, is that this beer was found at the back of the cellar. It has been aging on oak for 12 years. Was sampled on tap at Solomon's in Victoria.

Taste +4

The nose is sharp, vineous, yeasty and darkly fruity. This is a sipping beverage. Flavours of acetic acid, tart cassis, yeast and wood overwhelm the tongue with every little sip. Just a little sip is enough to cleanse the slimiest of palates.

Aftertaste +2

The long, sour tastes remind you of a dry blackcurrant wine.

Alcohol Content 0 5.4%

Not listed, but pulled from ratebeer.

Value +1

This is like nothing I have ever tasted. Like a Rodenbach turned up a few notches.

Ingame Enhancement +1

No game tonight. I just sat in Solomon's and enjoyed this beer in the company of my family.

Overall 8/10

This is something to be tasted at least once in a lifetime. Hopefully this will still be on tap somewhere. I heard the Alibi Room had some..

Chapeau Kriek Lambic and Boozy Energy Drinks Make You Dumb

I like energy drinks. My favourite one is old school, American Mountain Dew. In the August 2009 edition of Human Psychopharmacology, researchers tested the effects of alcoholic energy drinks on mental functioning. I'm sure you can guess the answer. No surprises here, those subjects that drank Sparks (6%ABV) scored lower on mental test than subjects that drank Green Monster or placebo (7-UP). The mental tests involved memory recall, visuospatial, language and attention tests. Of note in this study, subjects who drank Green Monster had greater attention scores and were more likely to sue Vermont microbrewers.

Lambics are one of the oldest style of beers available. These are wheat beers that are spontaneously fermented by naturally occurring yeasts. Often lambics are light in alcohol and taste, which makes them perfect for flavouring. The addition of fruit juices is a popular theme.

Taste +5

There is a strong nose of ripe bing cherries and that is all you can smell. This brew goes down with the same tastes as a cocktail. It is very sweet with heavy flavours of syrupy cherry juice. The heavy carbonation only seems to enhance the wonderful flavours.

Aftertaste +1

A very syrupy tartness finishes clean and dry after about 10 seconds.

Alcohol Content -1 3.5%

This is meant to be a beer to be enjoyed by anyone at anytime.

Value +1

If you ever wanted your wife/girlfriend to try a beer, this would be the gateway beer. As I mentioned before it is very similar to a fruity cocktail.

Ingame Enhancement +1

No gaming, but I did sit at my dinner table, sip this beer and my neighbors kid mow my lawn. Watching her work hard made this beer even more refreshing.

Overall 8/10

This is a wonderful, fruity and refreshing beer. You must like things sweet in order to appreciate this brew.
