Pike Tandem

Pike Tandem

Ratebeer 3.35 77th percentile
Beer Advocate B

This is one of those most go places for any beer drinker; the Pike Brewery near Pike Place Market. The pub is great, the beer is better and the food..yum.

Taste +4

It pours with a mucky, ruby/rust colour. Nose has a lot going on, but it is malty dominant with green apple and caramel. In stark contrast every sip is smooth and velvety. If you taste through the slight pit fruit tartness you get plums, bruised apricots, hints of yeast and bread. It reminds me a little of well made scones. Did I mention the grapefruit bitter ending..

Aftertaste +2

There was a long lingering of yeast mixed with bruised fruits.

Alcohol Content +1 7.5%

Ouch, but your tastebuds were focused on other things so the alcohol slipped right by.

Value +1

This is nice, slightly complex and delicious.
Ingame Enhancement +1

I have learned that I am not very good at versus on L4D. At least I did not score lowest.

Overall 9/10

If you like your beers big and on the sweet side, head for Seattle. It reminded me of a strong scotch ale with extra hops.

Pike Entire Wood Aged Stout 2009

Pike Entire Wood Aged Stout 2009

I picked this up from the Pike Place Brewery. Wow this is a fun place, highly recommended. The food was great, atmosphere was fun and kids were welcome. I was there for their 20th anniversary party, purely by coincidence.

Taste +5

I was fearful because the nose was very light, but you could pick up burnt wood, coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Pouring this beer was hard because it produced a huge fluffy head that never entirely went away. I should have used a shaker glass instead. The taste was just like the nose but only much richer. It is not often that you get a hop bitterness the is hard to distinguish from a bitter sweet chocolate ending. This brew was thick, rich and chewy. As it warmed up, it only got sweeter and smoother. It was not bitter at all.

Aftertaste +2

A very long, dry roasted coffee and bitter chocolate was a welcome ending.

Alcohol Content +1 9.5%

It was no where to be seen, either in the nose or the flavours.

Value +1

Bonus points given for beautiful packaging, the wax sealing was a nice touch. This would be interesting to cellar if you could wait that long

Ingame Enhancement +1

It is not often that you get a versus game of L4D going. Nothing is better than vomiting all over your friends, even if it is only virtual.

Overall 10/10

A perfect score for a prefect strong, bitter-sweet stout.

Pike XXXXX Extra Stout

Pike Street XXXXX Extra Stout

Ratebeer 3.8 97nd percentile

Taste +4
The nose is thick with coffee, roast, toffee and light on the alcohol. The brew too is thick and coats the entire mouth. In this beer paint are intense flavours of vanilla, burnt coffee, dark chocolate, roasted grains and oatmeal. Only the slightest of alcohol tingle finished the mouthful. The taste is nice and strong for a stout, or any beer for that matter.
Aftertaste +2

The same flavours lingered on and coated the throat. Then it morphs into an intense bitterness; almost like day old bitter espresso. The good kind of bitter espresso, very long and a tad earthy.

Alcohol Content +1 7%

Various batches will have different alcohol contents. Luckily I got a stronger one.
Value +1

This is a great stout and one of my favourites.

No gaming tonight, but I did transfer my first batch of homebrew for further fermentation.
Overall 9/10

This sure to be a favourite for thick, burnt stout fans.
