Double Dragon 2011 (Phillips)

It is very awkward when you do not finish a beer. This was not accidental; it was intentional. Breweries always produce quality beers that everyone will enjoy, right? If the beer tastes bad, it is my palate that's flawed. I tried a beer yesterday that I thought was pretty good, but others - whose opinions I value - didn't like it. Today I tried the new Phillips Double Dragon and didn't like it at all. Yet others in the blogosphere thought it was alright. So what do I think about these differences of opinions and questioning of my palate choices: GREAT, bring it on! Being a beer geek is all about exploring and trying new styles. You can like or dislike whatever you choose, but you must give a reason. Here is mine.

Double Dragon 2011 (Phillips) = -3/10

It all started great with a faint nose of slight citrus and watery caramel. Things started to go bad when the medium-full mouthfeel delivered too much alcohol burn. It all fell apart; the dirty caramel became overwhelmed by this unfocused hop bitterness. It was all over the place: mineral, grapefruit pith, herbal and medicinal. There was no focus. Then the aftertaste of soapy bitterness and dry herbal made me question my desire to have another sip. I tried again after it warmed up. It didn't help. My wife came through with the voice of reason,"if you really don't enjoy it, don't finish it." The remaining bottle was deposited in the sink.

1516 Bavarian Lager

1516 Bavarian Lager

Ratebeer 2.55 21st percentile
Beer Advocate B-

Sampled on tap at Christie's Pub.

Taste 0

There was no taste, just DMS and cream corn. If I had to pick another flavour it would be honey.

Aftertaste -1

The slick tongue coating was cream corn and dried grass clippings.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

Value -1

This was lame piss beer with no flavour.

Ingame Enhancement -1

There are sometimes you feel cheated. Mostly I feel sorry for Bavarians if this the beer they are expected to drink.

Overall -3

I think this is the lowest scoring beer tasted to date. Perhaps 'tasted' is not the correct word.

Fort Garry Dark Ale

Fort Garry Dark Ale

Ratebeer 2.79 27th percentile
Beer Advocate C+

Located in beautiful Winnipeg, the Fort Garry Brewing Company has been producing this dark ale for the enjoyment of all Manitobans. This is one more reason why I have no plans to visit this cold rock of a province.

Taste -1

The nose was ever so slight of roast and digested fruit (aka. vomit). No surprise to me the taste is no better; thin demerara sugar, acid and brunt white bread.

Aftertaste -1

The lingering was too acidic and tasted of golden pancake syrup.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

There really is nothing redeeming about this beer.

Value 0

It wasn't too bad; thankfully I never bought it.
Ingame Enhancement -1

I never played a lot this night because I had to leave to brush my teeth. The flavours would not get out of my mouth. When I finally returned, all the other players had gone to bed.

Overall -3/10

May I suggest we start a telethon to raise funds and send good beer the Manitoba?

Hitachino Nest XH

Hitachino Nest XH

This is the odd ball beer, a Belgian style ale aged in Sake casks.

Ratebeer 3.69 93 percentile
Beer Advocate B

Obvious lots of people loved this beer. Perhaps the emperor has a nice pair of Khakis.

Taste -2

Eww, the nose oozed lichen, musty and earth tones. The first sip was effervescent rice, wet nuts and tastes like listerine. It smelled like an old house.
Aftertaste 0

Thank goodness is faded fast and was clean.
Alcohol Content +1 7%

This was the only highlight of this beer.

Value -1

This beer was not tasty in the least; too musty and smokie.

Ingame Enhancement -1

I missed a few levels of L4D because I had to dump this beer out and brush my teeth.

Overall -3/10

You must be a fan of earthy and sake tastes to enjoy this beer. If you want something different, look for these owls. Whenever I see these little owls in the future I will reach for my autoshotty
