Local 2 (Brooklyn Brewery)

The strong dark Belgian ale beer category such a treat. Flavours are always complex and can change with aging and temperature serving. You have your strong Trappists, Abbey styles even Unibroue makes a couple.

Local 2 (Brooklyn Brewery) = 8/10

I must have some odd genetic defect; whenever I see a Brooklyn Brewery corked magnum, my wallet comes out and I start salivating. The aromas of dark fruit, spicy yeast and candied sugar are not helping my condition. I'm drooling for a reason: the full mouthfeel of dark honey, plums and rum cake cures my sickness. As I lose consciousness, the dry/tart yeast, alcohol burn and candied dark fruits lingers into blackness.

Brooklyn Brown Ale

Ratebeer 3.41 89th percentile
Beer Advocate B

Taste +3
  • nose is roasted and caramel malts
  • colour is deep brown with an off white/tan head
  • Nice effervescent carbonation up front
  • slightly earthy hops that barely contain the rich caramel and roasted mild chocolate malts
  • Very malt forward
Aftertaste +1
  • Clean and slightly dry with dry roasted caramel. The malt quickly fades away

It wasn't that exciting, but it was good and flavourful.

Meh, I need to rethink this blog I am over 100 beers behind in reviewing.

Overall 5/10

A good malty and roasted chocolate brew. Interesting enough to please the seasoned beer drinker, but not scary enough to repulse the light beer crowd.

Brooklyn Lager

Brooklyn Lager

Ratebeer 3.43 90th percentile
Beer Advocate B+

Taste +4

The nose is cool with menthol and faint biscuity malts. A well done lager is an uneventful brew; luckily this is far from uneventful. The light citrus (lemon) and floral hops jumps out at you to grab your tongues attention. This fades off to reveal a bread and biscuit malt.

Aftertaste +1

The quickly fading hops leaves a floral hop ending. Then it is gone, clean.

Alcohol Content 0 5.2%

Value +1

An above average and flavourful lager.

Ingame Enhancement +1

Just bumping the score up.

Overall 7/10

It's a lager: clean, crisp and easy drinking. The enhanced citrus and bready flavours were a nice surprise.

Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale 55

Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale 55

This was part of the Brooklyn mixed box I picked up at the James Bay Spinnakers CBAW.

Ratebeer 3.09 55th percentile
Beer Advocate B

Taste +3

There were delightful faint nasal offerings of roast and fresh bread/malt. With ample carbonation, this dark amber brew delivers a spicy and floral hop tickle up front. This gives way to dry malt that is slightly roasted with bready/biscuity bits.

Aftertaste 0

The dry and spicy hops releases a slightly fruity finish that vanishes quickly.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

A good, drinkable pale ale is not meant to be a heavy hitter.

Value +1

This is a great pale ale. The same could be said for every beer in the mixed pack.

Ingame Enhancement +1

I'm sure I played something. This brew gets bonus points for quality and being in a awesome box pack.

Overall 5/10

A great pale ale, enough said.

Brooklyn Winter Ale and Historical Events

Flavius: This is a great day in history.
Meterman: Right. I'm surprised you know about GM filling for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
F: What? That doesn't surprise me, who wanted to buy a hybrid Hummer anyways? No, today they announced Left 4 Dead 2!
M: I'm sorry but chainsaws and zombies is a little stale and overdone.
F: I like the idea of beating a zombie with a frying pan.
M: I'm sure your wife has lots of tips for your frying pan technique.

The nose was a little more malty than I normally like; there is also a very slight clove spiciness. It is a full bodied beer which has a heavy presence of creamy, caramel malt. Overall it's a smooth sweetish brew with hints of bourbon and vanilla. The hops are understated and only give a slight earthy bitterness.

Aftertaste +1

There is a smooth fading of the sweetness.

Alcohol Content +1 6.1%

Value +1

It was an above average beer. I think this one was picked up on sale at the Fairfield BCLS for about $13 for a 6pack.

Ingame Enhancement +1

Left 4 Dead 2 coming in November. Who says zombies don't make a great Christmas gift?

Overall 7/10

The would be the prefect brew for someone who likes their beers on the sweet side.

Local 1 - Brooklyn Brewery

No sleep 'til Brooklyn Local 1 is reviewed. This beer just looks impressive; massive 750mlish (1 Pint, 9.4 fl oz), 9% alcohol, bottle refermented and corked.

Taste +4

Once this puppy is opened the nose of malt, bread and spice is everywhere. The taste is just as you would expect; mildly bitter with a nice sweetness chaser. If you were to put it in a category, it would be a Belgian. But there are still the flavours of bitter apple, citrus fruits and banana. This brew is a little on the sweet side, but not too much. Be warned it is very drinkable.

Aftertaste +2

A short lingering of spice (cloves and nutmeg) balanced with the sweet malt that just stops at the right time.

Alcohol Content +1 9.0%

Ouch, I finished the whole bottle before getting to the first safe house in Left 4 Dead. You can hardly taste the alcohol on this one.

Value +1

I forgot how much I paid for this one, but I would buy it again. I think it came from the Strath or Penny Farthing.

This was consumed on my first L4D online co-op. There is great pleasure derived from blasting zombies when you can't really feel your hands.

Overall 9/10 BOOM ZOMBIESHOT

This beer actually drew my attention away from gameplay, that must mean it's a great beer.
