Mikkeller Stateside

So it is true, I am a beer consultant! While this sounds great, it's excitement is lacking. No - I am not being fair - it is awesome. Beer bloggers are despised and paid nothing. In fact, it sucks lots of my hard earned cash to maintain this beer blogging lifestyle. Contrary to popular belief, I don't drink a lot of beer. However, the limited beer I drink is very good. Some of my vacations are focused on beer. Whenever I ask,"Honey would you mind..." I get yelled at. They know the request will usually involve beer. I doubt I will ever be a Stephen Beaumont or Roger Protz, but there will be small victories.

Pick every hop flavour you can dream of and stick it in a bottle; this is that bottle. The aromas are all things hoppy: floral, citrus, grapefruit and cotton candy. Just to be certain, add a little caramel malts for perfection. An acidic astringency smacks you up front, but in a nice hoppy way. This long, dry citrus, herbal mixture lasts until the end of time. It takes a Danish brewery to create a great PNW IPA.

It's a stout and it's big. Please insert the word 'big' in front of every word used to describe this beer. Aromas of vanilla, sweet chocolate, alcohol and wood are everywhere. To taste this beer is similar to licking a spoonful of honey. It's thickness coated the mouth with roast, earthy hops and burnt coffee. None of these big flavours would go away. Truly excellent.

Raasted Imperial Stout

Imperial Stouts: you either love them or you don't. These beers age gracefully if you have the patience.

An outstanding nose with vanilla, bitter chocolate and citrus (orange). The mouthfeel is unique: velvety, yet prominent alcohol burn/tingle. All this is bundled with roasted milk chocolate, espresso, citrus/pine hops and vanilla. It coats every dental filling with cooling alcohol and roasted chocolate for a linger to remember. Think of this as Guinness on steroids.

Ok, I only bought this beer because it was highly rated at ratebeer.com. Other beers that fell into my basket were Pliny the Elder, Rochefort 10 and Hair of the dog Dave. I didn't read the label closely, time was an issue, only had time to grab and run. So the story begins..

It poured as dark as my parole officers heart, with a short lived espresso gelato head. The aroma must be experienced; sweet roasted espresso, vanilla and bitter chocolate. As the brew warmed up bourbon and ethanol became apparent. Did I mention that it poured thick with sediment? The taste made me weep; very creamy, burnt oat toast, espresso and good bittersweet chocolate (70%+ cocoa mass). It was a very big tasting beer.

There was a never ending bittersweet chocolate that coated everything. Oddly, you pick out citrus hints.

Alcohol Content +1 10.9%

You would never have guessed the high alcohol content, it was hidden well.

Upon further reading of bottle "...brewed with Civet coffee..". That explains the $17 bucks a bottle. Meterman then pipes up, "We are drinking cat-scat-coffee-beer? Are you sure that sediment wasn't kitty litter?" It was worth it.

No video games this evening. The boys decimated my beer fridge; Weasel, Allagash White, and Doppel-Hirsch all vanished. I think Kyle drank a Blue Buck also.

Overall 10/10

This was the greatest beer I have ever tried; only slightly better than Rochefort 10. If you can get it, try it.
